On the left side of your screen, sort plans by Monthly Price and look for the first bronze plan that appears in the list. As of 2022, you can qualify for this exemption if the lowest-priced coverage available to you through either a Marketplace or an employer-sponsored health plan would cost more than 8.09% of your household income. Workers’ compensation insurance is required for all employers operating in Colorado, with a few limited exceptions listed on our Independent Contractors and Coverage Exemptions page.
Beginning in 2014, the law required all individuals to have and maintain health care coverage, have a health care coverage exemption, or pay a fee (tax penalty) each year if you file a federal income tax return. The Indian Exemption may be claimed on a federal tax return using Form 8965. If you have an Exemption Certificate Number (ECN) you can enter it on form 8965 but you can still claim the exemption using form 8965 even if you do not have an ECN. What is an Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) Hardship Exemption?
You need to report each instance of coverage you had as you complete Schedule HC. If you moved out of Massachusetts during the year, the health care mandate applies to you up until the last day of the last full month you were a resident. If you’re a resident, or in some cases a part-year resident, file Schedule HC with your Form 1 or Form 1-NR/PY. Fill in the Health Care Information section on your Schedule HC to prove that you have health insurance that meets MCC requirements. Depending on the type of exemption you qualify for, you will need to submit an application to Healthcare.gov or request the exemption from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) when you file your taxes. However, if you choose to file a tax return, you will need to claim the coverage exemption, but you should be exempt from making the payment since your income was below the filing requirements. Don’t worry if you receive a Form MA 1099-HC that lists your middle initial incorrectly. There will be no problem, since you don’t transcribe your name from the Form MA 1099-HC onto the Schedule HC.
But a person who is 30 or older cannot purchase a catastrophic plan unless they qualify for a hardship exemption. You claim your health insurance exemption(s) on Form 8965 and attach the form to your tax return. You only need to submit one Form 8965 with your tax return, using separate lines to report each individual and the exemption type. Even if you had a one-month exemption during the year, you need to report that one month on your return. However, you will not owe a tax payment for not having insurance for that month.
